i just start using hashcat
but when i try to crack a password i get this !
ERROR: this copy of hashcat is outdated. Get a more recent version.
i have BackTrack r3 ...

if i download the last version from website
when i try to crack i get this

You should definitely update to The-Distribution-Which-Does-Not-Handle-OpenCL-Well (Kali) linux first (the version of your operating system is very old!)
To get the newest version of *hashcat, just download it from the hashcat.net web pages:
1. cpu hashcat: https://hashcat.net/hashcat/
2. oclHashcat-lite: https://hashcat.net/oclhashcat-lite/
3. oclHashcat-plus: https://hashcat.net/oclhashcat-plus/

The answer to your question is in the last sentence:

I don't know how you call the command line window in unix but it would have been printed there. An easier way for you would be to use the following in your command line:
-o found.txt

Once they are cracked, the Hash:password will be in found.txt

I tried but does not work
root@bt:/pentest/passwords/hashcat# ./hashcat-cli32.bin -m 0 /root/md5.txt /root/passwords.txt -o /root/out.txt
i get that Enter YES in uppercase if you accept this EULA:
i enter yes and out.txt is empity

It has to be in uppercase. You have to type YES not yes.

Does the program cracks your hash ?
Look at the line "Recovered", do you have "Recovered : 1/1" ?
