what sort of attack would i use on an md5 hash if i only know that it is a 32 character long hex string?
Do you mean that the plaintext is 32 characters?

If so, then unless you have a strong idea of its composition, bruteforce cannot reach even half of that keyspace.

yes the plaintext is a 32 char hex string.

Is this something i should just forget about even trying or is there any sort of route i could take?
Just forget about even trying is a good strategy if you only have a hash and know the plaintext is 16^32 (340282366920938463463374607431768211456) possibilities.

These guys at www.onlinehashcrack.com have 10 RTX 2080 Ti cards and can do 551.2 GH/s for MD5 (https://www.onlinehashcrack.com/tools-be...070-ti.php).

They would take 1.958×10^19 years (about 1.4×10^9 times the current age of the universe) to search through your space.
