Shouldn't R9 Nano this be a nice choice because a) offering 4096 shaders and b) low power consum... |

+1 on maxwell. will probably also go the 980 direction, as it's seems to be the tradeoff between performance, power consumption and initial investment. |

p.s. ended up purchasing multiple ZOTAC gtx980's ... 5 years warranty (good for later resale), good hashes-per-watt, and i get 2x980 for the same price as 1x titan x (so more bang for the buck).

That's true, indeed i wasn't thinking of a 16 GPU system, but 16 slots (= 8 GPUs max).
I've mentioned 16 slots from the magma chassis, which really meant to be 16 slots (therefore 8 GPUs), not 16 GPU... |

Another DIY alternative is to use e.g. ASrock BTC series mainboard and connect 6 GPUs via cheap PCIe riser cables. Bitcoin miners often do this. This mobo can drive 6 GPUs for a very low price (~65 $)... |

for Nvidia cards, make sure they have "maxwell" or better "maxwell 2.0".
for AMD: make sure you don't have to pay for electricity by yourself, they need a lot more electricity. about twice as much.

@overclocking: usually not a problem for both AMD and NVIDIA ... you don't need to pay more for a vendor-overclocked card, as you can usually freely adjust the clock speeds with software. the power/he... |
