if your focus is on hash cracking then avoid nvidia.
check out https://www.gat3way.eu/est.php and look at the MH/s columns for each GPU. this will give you a good idea of what to buy.

Thnx. But in my case the ATI has more overall Cores (160) but the nVidia(s) has just 48 CUDA Cores. Does CUDA actually make a difference ?

Thread: Good budget GPU ?
Post: RE: Good budget GPU ?
7970 is a budget GPU -- you just have to budget a little more for it. And considering its MSRP was half of what the 6990 was, it's quite a bargain.
but seriously, don't waste your money on cheap, low... |

definitely not worth the price or the hassle. easier and cheaper to just run 2x 7970. also, 8970 will be out in Q2 with the GCN2 architecture... |

hardware combination looks good. you will not lose performance using a pci-e 3.0 card in a pci-e 2.0 slot, no. not for what we do, anyway. for the os, we officially recommend ubuntu 12.04 lts. check o... |

if you are going to put the GPUs into a case, then you should probably buy reference design cards. |

you will need a lot more than 1000W of power. you should budget at least 1200W RMS to power the GPUs alone, so i would recommend going with a 1500W or 1600W 80plus Gold or Platinum-certified power sup... |

reference design cards have enclosed shrouds with a single centrifugal fan, which forces the hot exhaust air out the rear of the card and completely out of the case.
non-reference design cards have o... |

The reference design has been visually the same for the last 5+ years. If it changes I'm sure it will be adequately discussed.
In the mean time, check out those Newegg links I posted above. The refer... |

Actually, i just thought of a pretty good way to determine what the reference design looks like: just go to AMD's website and look at the picture of the card :]

I'm really surprised that you needed to put Accelero coolers on 5870s, especially when you had that much spacing in between them. I like your setup there though, that's pretty slick! |

if you want to build an 8 GPU rig, you really should use a TYAN FT77B7015. it will save you a TON of headaches.
