Thread: Pipe is -very- slow
Post: RE: Pipe is -very- slow
You're running a straight dictionary attack against a fast hash, so it is impossible to gain GPU acceleration as you do not have an amplifier. You then made an already-slow attack even slower by using... |

Thread: Please grant me one dumb question
Post: RE: Please grant me one dumb question
Hashing is not encryption, and hashcat's focus is on cracking hashes, not breaking encryption.
There is some small overlap between the two with programs which create encrypted files by passing the... |

Thread: Pipe is -very- slow
Post: RE: Pipe is -very- slow
It's a potential workaround, not a magic fix. Pipe incurs more host-device transfers and is more sensitive to PCI-e bus speed & latency.
You should be using cpu hashcat for this attack. |

Thread: Pipe is -very- slow
Post: RE: Pipe is -very- slow
It depends on the hardware and the workload. There's no "one size fits all" answer, you just have to know your tools. In this case, it looks like Mem5 has a really underpowered CPU if he's only pullin... |

Thread: Another gpu question
Post: RE: Another gpu question
Correct, it is not a reference card, it is an OEM design based on the old GTX 670 reference design. Furthermore, the old "if it has 'GAMING' in the title it's not reference design" line really applies... |

Thread: TEA/XTEA imp
Post: RE: TEA/XTEA imp
No. TEA is a block cipher, and hashcat targets hash algorithms. See also https://hashcat.net/forum/thread-4874-post-27356.html#pid27356 |

Thread: FirePro V7800
Post: RE: FirePro V7800
Firepro v7800 is an underclocked HD 5850. So old and slow. Moreover, AMD is dropping support for their VLIW5 cards in the next driver release, so you wouldn't be able to use this GPU for very long. |

Post: RE: TEA/XTEA imp
No, Hashcat doesn't support cracking DES encryption. But it does support some password hashing algorithms which incorporate DES (descrypt, LM hash, etc.) Hashcat does support some popular encrypted fi... |

Thread: How do I crack substr hash?
Post: RE: How do I crack substr hash?
Normally I'd be all like "THREAD NECRO" and ban you for posting on a thread that's almost 3 years old, but since it's kind of my fault that you did so, I can't really get mad.
I'm not entirely sure i... |

Thread: Value of --pw-max must be smaller or equal to 32
Post: RE: Value of --pw-max must be smaller or equal to ...
Just basic, elementary maths. Keyspace for this attack is 16^64. Fastest GPU (Titan X) can crack sha256 at 2.2 GH/s. This means you would need 1.6x10^54 Titan X GPUs to crack this password in one mill... |

Thread: Packages for Linux distributions

I am, but you knew that.
The problem with packaging hashcat right now, as dropdead and I were discussing, is that hashcat doesn't exactly adhere to the FHS. Basically the hashcat directory is a wor... |

Ok, here's an example of a package manifest for oclHashcat 64bit (truncated in places where repetitive)

I agree with #1-4.
For #5, I'd much rather prefer to see ~/.hashcat/tmp over /tmp/hashcat, if for no other reason than to better enable multiple users to share the same system.
