For simple salt+pass concatenation, -a 1, -a 6, -a 7 can all be leveraged.

Speed was lower because you cracked the password immediately, didn't get a chance to do any work. Moreover, as was already mentioned, you need to add an amplifier to gain any acceleration.

Professional graphics cards are slower and way more expensive than their desktop counterparts. There's no reason to pay the upcharge.

Just because it hasn't been updated for 16.04 doesn't mean it's not relevant anymore. This is how I still build out my remaining AMD systems.
