If both Ubuntu and ESXi are only seeing four cards, then it sounds like you have another issue going on. Maybe you can provide a bit more details about your setup.

the first gpu is the reference design card, which is what you want. i would not consider the "newer" model as it suggests. cpu only matters if you plan to use cpu hashcat as well.

The GPU you've selected is an OEM design card, not a reference design card, which we would never recommend buying for hash cracking. Further, I would strongly recommend the GTX 970 over the 290X.
