| Correct, I wouldn't go lower than a 1070 in the GTX 10 series. Outside of that, a used GTX 980 Ti or GTX 980 should be within your price range. |

| afaict there is no difference between an R9 280X and a 7970. they appear to be the same gpu. so no, it won't perform better than a 7970. |

| Forget AMD. Currently the best GPUs are GTX 970, 980, 980 Ti, and Titan X. Any of them will be an upgrade over your current HD 7950. |

| not presently. but you could get creative... use an hcmask file for various keyspace ranges, then run through each hcmask file in a loop, using a lower markov threshold as the keyspace increases. |

| correct, EC2 is extremely poor Perf/$ and bitcoin/litecoin asics will not work.
however, as of right now, there aren't really any other options for renting GPU servers. so you're pretty much stuck ... |
