Actually the common practice of storing hashes as a hex-string is just as stupid as using a simple hash function like md5 for protecting passwords. Just a waste of space.

If you know you will only do gpu cracking a cheap dual core will be fine. RAM speed doesn't matter at all. Power consumption obviously depends on the gpus you have. The type of cooling you need ...

If you want to use more than 8 gpus you must use nvidia. The latest nvidia chipset is recommeded over amd.
