You can use the sha256 kernel and modify that to add ecdsa public key derivation, then ripemd160. But well, that's what needs to be done.

No, it doesn't. -D selects the device type and 2 is for GPU. Also, for functional testing the workload factor is irrelevant.

make sure your hashes have the same format and length as the example hash on https://hashcat.net/wiki/doku.php?id=example_hashes verify you can crack the example hash.

If you receive the same error with the example hash something is wrong with your command line. I suspect the --username switch.

Could be anything. The file may be damaged or maybe a slightly different format is used in newer versions of bitcoind.
