If you receive the same error with the example hash something is wrong with your command line. I suspect the --username switch.

Could be anything. The file may be damaged or maybe a slightly different format is used in newer versions of bitcoind.

Have you tried cracking the example hash? Try using the 4.2.0-rc2 version here: https://hashcat.net/beta/

You should tell hashcat what it is supposed to do. All you told it is what hash to attack.

Of course those numbers are not always identical. Otherwise there'd be no reason to include them in the hash string. There should not be any spaces anywhere.

you have garbage characters at the beginning of the hash file. See the first two characters. Probably a BOM. If you use a proper text editor you can disable the BOM.
