You would only need to backup the part you are overwriting with the backup header. If it decrypts it decrypts.

By backup header I mean backup whatever you are overwriting. You need to know what that is. And yes, in the worst case it will simply fail to unlock.

Assuming a theoretical hash rate of 1 TH/s (which is already very fast, even for a fast hash mode) you'd be looking at about 10^43 years of cracking. Pretty sure that's well beyond the expected end of...

by default hashcat will create a session called "hashcat". You can restore the session by simply running "hashcat --restore".

oclHashcat/cudaHashcat was not open source. All existing versions were time-nuked, are not available any more and would not work any more.

Something is badly broken with your OpenCL drivers. You probably have a bad driver installed. This doesn't necessarily have to be your nvidia graphics driver.

You will need to enable increment mode. By default it will only try the exact mask length.
