You would only need to backup the part you are overwriting with the backup header. If it decrypts it decrypts. |

By backup header I mean backup whatever you are overwriting. You need to know what that is. And yes, in the worst case it will simply fail to unlock. |

as written by NoReply, hashcat is using markov chains to generate candidates in a mask attack, hence the candidates are not sorted by lexicographical order by default. |

change your working directory. hashcat.pot is always stored in your CWD. |

2501 doesn't use normal word lists. That's the difference over 2500… |

He literally gave you the command for that. All you need to do is switch out the letters ABCD. |

You replace the character D by the character A. Yes, it's that simple.
It's the same for oclhashcat but that's severely outdated and if something doesn't work you're on your own. |
