there is no guarantee for a "total random word" not to equal "aaaaaa"

what exactly is it you don't understand about "random"? There is no pattern. A random password can also be "aaaaaaa" or "hello1". It is just exactly the same probability.

remove only removes one instance of the hash. If it appears multiple times it will only be removed once. sort -u your hash files before running.

The lastest beta version (hashcat 3) has a single binary for all supported cpu/gpu devices. https://hashcat.net/beta/

The new version probably handles the salts a bit different and hence needs more vram. Split up your hashlist and try again.

Oh, I'm sorry I didn't read your post properly. Running a mask attack on a single hash should definitely not exhaust your vram.

With newer cards nvidia does not allow to read the gpu usage. This feature is restricted to the cad/development cards only.

lets call it "visual flavour". It doesn't really mean anything for markov mask attacks.

A rainbow table is something very different from a list of hashes. Besides, no, you can't.

since this seems to refer to the old gui I guess it is indeed outdated? exploit-db is currently down so i couldn't check.

erm, ok. Was a bit confused because you were talking about "hashcat 0.9" which I was unable to map to any hashcat version and thus concluded you were talking about the gui version number.
