Are you sure you were running the command with -a 6? The error message shows an error for the -a 1 kernel.

Well, it depends on what exactly you are trying to do but I guess you forgot to supply a wordlist.

You would only need to backup the part you are overwriting with the backup header. If it decrypts it decrypts.

By backup header I mean backup whatever you are overwriting. You need to know what that is. And yes, in the worst case it will simply fail to unlock.

you can pipe the maskprocessor output to hashcat. no need to save anything to disk.
