The most important question is, does the new OSS driver support OpenCL. At this point, radeon-crimson-15.12-15.302-151217a-297685e.zip is the best driver you can get for oclHashcat on linux. But...

No, because there's no support for 290x / 7970. Most people have these cards.

what he meant is you have do run cudaHashcat-plus64 instead of oclHashcat-plus64 when working with nvidia. OCL is for AMD only. however, i cant recall seeing your card on any of the supported hardware...

If you want performance there's no way around rewriting the crypto functions on gpgpu. Or you do it half-way. Do only the slow stuff on GPU and the rest on CPU with a crypto library.
