There definitely was used windows also you can see dummy plug on every card as a proof of windows. So nothing more here to tell, people runs fine even 8 GPU on one motherboard so you can have there 4x...

For MD5 you don't need bus bandwidth as all work is done one video cards itself. On this forum there is even explanation why for hashcat pciex1 is more than enough. Don't be lazy and search a bit. p....

Ive just told for your goal - so yes, you need only 4 pciex1 4 risers, 1 cheap motherboard with sempron like cpu, 2 gb ram, and 1 8 GB usb key for os install. All that will be price dependent - GPU's ...

so buy cheap motherboard, cpu for desktop, one or two HD7970 and use ssh to communicate and to feed jobs for that pc. It looks like small problem when having 1.5K USD.

Yes, it support multiple cards. For AMD you can put in total 8 GPU, so 4x dual cards or 8x single.

Sometimes not rip as not always gpu fail. I would start checking mosfet's under heatspreader for short circuit.

On high iterated hashes 5 series slower than 6 by ~10% at same clocks, maybe because of VLIV? You can check benchmarks thread, there are 5970 and 6990 all hashes.
