I'm not sure what you mean by less sophisticated but it's pretty straight forward. WPA/WPA2 has to be 8-length or more, if you're trying to brute force you're more than likely not going to do anything...

Easiest solution is to look for keygens already made for the type of router you're attempting to attack first. Afterwards search default passwords to find common lengths used and the keyspace they use...
