You can play with -u and -n until you achieve a good speed/temperature ratio. Maybe your cooling solution is also not optimal.

cat all your rules in a single rulefile, use that rulefile. (using multiple -r for each rulefile would combinate all rules)

Confirmed for the exception, please add a trac ticket for this issue : https://hashcat.net/trac/ Then for speed, if you didn't already know it, md5crypt uses a salt, and a high number of iterations...

You perfectly said it, the obvious answer is : the salt. '1234' is the salt appended to the hash with the ':' as separator. (If you don't specify it, hashcat won't guess it by itself)
