You perfectly said it, the obvious answer is : the salt.
'1234' is the salt appended to the hash with the ':' as separator.
(If you don't specify it, hashcat won't guess it by itself) |

You have to use "7z x" to extract the hashcat archive, then use the *.bin files on linux. |

Here is a hint: not every hex string is a md5 hash, there are many different algorithms.
If you're not a lame skiddie you should know what your hashes are. |

So this obviously not what you were saying, it's not "2 rules", not even 2 rules files, you're giving it many rules files, hashcat will combine all of them (as in 64*5000*3000 etc.).
No surprise it... |
