I used a Ryzen 5 2700U in a Thinkpad A485 at work with hashcat for a while, although I did it on Windows. If you are just running straight wordlists it is slow but will thermally be OK for a few hours...

many people here start with the hashes.org "founds" lists for plaintexts as they are a clean source of good passwords for unknown sources. these mixed with a good ruleset (OneRuleToRuleThemAll, etc.) ...
