You did not specify a certain attack mode, so hashcat will take the default "straight" mode 0, which just tries every single word from your list. Add masks or use brute-force like slyexe recommended.

If you leave enough space between the cards, it might work. But no chance with back to back.

Depends on ehat you want to do with it. You could also have a powerful machine at home, feed it with the hashes to crack through the iunternet and control everything via RDP.

transout, I might be wrong but the memory shown by Hashcat is only 3072MB, although all 290X have 4GB+. Maybe that's your source of probs.

Is your CPU hashing too? Otherwise try to use stock clock and run one simple benchmark. See if the results are as expected with all the usual hash methods (MD4, MD5, NTLM etc.).
