Thread: Discrepancy between Benchmark numbers and actual numbers

Ok so for giggles I did some testing, and accidentally came across something.
Here's the benchmark for MD5

Think I found something wrong with hashcat itself, but you guys are the experts not me.
If I run this attack with -w3 or -w4, I get something like this -
hashcat64.exe -m0 -a3 d:\hashlists\Rand... |

Like I said, it was a broken command and I get that. What I don't understand is why using -w in any form more than halves my speed but -O nearly maxes it out. |

I moved the rule to the other side of the pipe, this happens...

What has me wondering if I'd be better off huffing paint is WHY this command gets such high speeds, but when I correct it, it doesn't get anywhere NEAR the speeds. Same idea with NTLM instead of MD5. ... |

Random thought, it would be nice to have a benchmark that I could specify the type of attack. Right now, the benchmark command just runs a brute force. Maybe an option for mask, hybrid mask etc so you... |

Because I'm functionally illiterate. Whoops.

Update time!
Ok, so here is current performance against NTLM -
hashcat64.exe -m1000 -a3 d:\hashlists\Random\test.txt -O ?a?a?a?a?a?a?a?a -i -w2

It's the product of both rulesets - rule 1 from list 1 AND rule 1 from list 2, etc etc.
This is one reason why ':' (do nothing) is often included in rulesets... |
