I am not really locked into one of these options, but would like something around the $300-$400 range with a reference cooler. So if there are others I am not listing feel free to add.

How does that work? Doesn't the gpu just heat up right away? Kinda like running a cpu without some kind of cooler?

Has anyone tried the 7990 yet? I would think it would be pretty hard to keep cool especially if you have 4 of them side by side.

Would you need to leave a 2 slot gap or could you get by with just one? This way you could do more cards assuming the catalyst driver is still working with more than 8 GPUs per machine.

I just saw once it was suppose to work with more than 8, but I haven't actually attempted to use more than 8.

I would be interested to know the results. That could make the Tyan chassis with 7990s ideal.(assuming you can keep them cool)

The 7990 is just two 7970 chips on one card. The performance results are similar to two 7970s if you want to get an idea.

I would maybe spend just a couple more dollars and get a little better motherboard, one that accepts two full size slots for GPUs, that way if you want to add another in the future you will be good. ...

The 9970 is a new chipset coming out from AMD. From what I understand it is basically a 7990 in one chip instead of two. I don't think they have set a release date yet just specs have been published...
